Portrait of a Monster

Writer's picture: Ashna TibrewalAshna Tibrewal

Powerful monsters like this one delight in hiding in plain sight. It revels in the lonely hearts and makes them a puppet to feelings. Foolish men ask, "What's better than one lonely heart?" The monster smirkingly answers," Two lonely hearts strung together with a false thread of hope." I have discovered that every monster's favourite pastime is learning cryptic words and vague answers. The beast, whose name you know and don't know, will come to you on a fine evening when you are already half-eaten. Anyone who has set out to describe this monster and his eating style has never gotten the same answer. It comes to every person but those alone are easy prey. It also comes to those who are independent and strong with a soft heart. It has tasted every delicacy of humans and licked an array of emotions, from the richest to the poorest and wisest to dumbest. Villains and heroes alike fall on their knees in front of it. Great wars of history's root cause are this being- how it makes humans feel. It influences your mind and makes it his own. There is no free will after that point. Your helplessness feels like good dependence when it's the slowest poison. Everyone gets blinded by its name and calls all deeds fair. You are just a doll to his will; whatever it may be, you can't do anything. All is done in the name of this monster who purrs in pleasure at every call. Nothing is left for him to experience. Hiding behind the shade of the cheeks when talking to your crush, the bruise left by a kiss and the blood on the bed sheet on the first morning after the scandal. From the first fruit, children learn to the ground soldiers uttering their last words, it's always there. Hidden behind every action, every story, and every struggle- you can find it slumbering. Few people instead of succumbing to its power are driven by it. They make the grandest of buildings, write the most beautiful stories, and sing songs loved by millions. It has fooled everyone with the euphoria of happiness, putting them at the highest peak. But in the end, it's the cause of the greatest pain and crashes everyone into the chasms of hell.  On one hand, it hurts to be its prey but it's a shame never to experience. The eaten always say it's better to be eaten bitterly than never to have the euphoria it brings along.

Writer's Note- An old draft, finally getting acknowledged. Could you guess the monster's name?
